Best Windows 11 Settings for Gaming

6 min read

Windows 11 ships tuned for a general audience — battery life, security defaults, and background services all take priority over raw gaming performance. Here are the settings genuinely worth changing, grouped by where they live, so you can dial the OS in for games without breaking anything.

Gaming settings

  • Game Mode: Settings → Gaming → Game Mode → On. Prioritizes your game and suppresses background interruptions.
  • Captures: turn off background recording unless you use it — it constantly encodes video and costs frames.
  • Graphics preference: Settings → System → Display → Graphics — set each game to 'High performance' so it always uses your dedicated GPU.

Display settings

  • Set the refresh rate to your monitor's maximum under Advanced display — the single most common missed setting.
  • Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling under Graphics → Change default graphics settings.
  • Turn on Auto HDR only if your display genuinely supports HDR; otherwise it can wash out colors for no benefit.

Power and performance

  • Choose High Performance (or Ultimate Performance) under Control Panel → Power Options so the CPU doesn't down-clock mid-game.
  • Consider disabling Virtualization-Based Security (memory integrity) if you don't rely on it — it has a measurable CPU cost in games.
  • Disable CPU core parking so all cores stay available under load.

Apps and startup

  • Settings → Apps → Startup: disable launchers, updaters, and RGB/overlay utilities you don't need at boot.
  • Task Manager → Startup apps: sort by startup impact and cut the heavy ones.
  • Turn off background permissions for apps that don't need to run when closed.

A word on registry tweaks

Beyond the visible settings, there are registry-level tweaks — network stack tuning, GPU priority, MMCSS multimedia scheduling, privacy and telemetry policies — that add up to real gains. They're safe when done correctly, but editing the registry by hand is where people break things. Change the value slightly wrong, forget what you changed, and you're stuck.

SurgeFPS applies all of the above — the visible settings and the registry-level ones — as one-click, reversible optimizations, with an optional System Restore Point beforehand and a plain-English explanation of what each change does. Free to download, basic tweaks included on the free tier.
