How to Fix Stuttering in Games on Windows (2026)

8 min read

Stutter is different from low FPS: your counter can say 200 and the game still hitches. That's because a stutter is one frame that takes far too long, and the average hides it. The fix depends entirely on the cause — so the first step is working out which one you have.

The common causes, and their fixes

  1. 1
    Shader compilation

Hitches when you see a new effect or area for the first time, especially after a game or driver update. Usually fades after a few sessions. Let games finish any 'compiling shaders' step before playing, and don't reinstall drivers constantly.

  2. 2
    Background CPU spikes

A browser tab, Discord, an antivirus scan, Windows Update or a cloud sync app briefly grabs the CPU and delays a frame. Close what you don't need, and schedule Windows Update and antivirus scans outside gaming hours.

  3. 3
    Thermal throttling

Stutter that gets worse the longer you play is the classic sign. Check CPU/GPU temperatures, clean dust out of fans and filters, and on laptops use a stand or cooling pad.

  4. 4
    RAM running slow or full

Enable XMP/EXPO in the BIOS so RAM runs at its rated speed, and close memory-heavy apps. When RAM fills up, Windows swaps to disk and games hitch.

  5. 5
    Game on a hard drive

Open-world games stream assets while you play. From an HDD that causes hitches; moving the game to an SSD fixes it.

  6. 6
    Uneven frame pacing

An uncapped frame rate swings wildly and feels choppy. Cap FPS slightly below your refresh rate, and use G-Sync/FreeSync if your monitor supports it.

Measure it: watch your 1% lows

Average FPS won't show stutter. The 1% low — the frame rate of the slowest 1% of frames — does. If your average is fine but the 1% lows are far below it, you have a stutter problem, not a raw-performance problem, and a faster GPU won't necessarily fix it.

SurgeFPSSurgeFPS logs every game session and marks each stutter on the frame-rate chart with its measured cause — a Discord CPU spike, a Defender scan, GPU thermal throttling — then offers a one-click fix. No more guessing which of the causes above is yours.
