How to Fix Valorant Stutter and FPS Drops (2026)
6 min read
Valorant is light on the graphics card and heavy on the CPU, which is why it can stutter on PCs that run much bigger games fine. Anything stealing CPU time — a browser, an overlay, a background scan — shows up as a frame spike. Fixing it is mostly about settings that lower CPU load and a clean background.
Best Valorant graphics settings for FPS
- 1Display Mode: Fullscreen
Settings → Video → General → Display Mode → Fullscreen. Windowed modes add latency and can make frame pacing less consistent.
- 2Lower the quality settings
Under Graphics Quality, set Material, Texture, Detail and UI Quality to Low. Turn off Vignette, Bloom, Distortion and Cast Shadows. Valorant still looks clean on Low, and most pros play this way.
- 3V-Sync off, NVIDIA Reflex on
Turn V-Sync off and set NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency to On + Boost. If you use G-Sync/FreeSync, cap your FPS a few frames below your refresh rate instead of using V-Sync.
- 4Keep anti-aliasing low
MSAA 2x is a good balance; None for the most FPS. Anisotropic filtering at 1x–4x costs almost nothing either way.
- 5Cap your FPS
In General, enable Limit FPS Always and set it a bit above your refresh rate. A stable cap stops the huge swings between menu and fight scenes that feel like stutter.
Why Valorant stutters on good PCs
Because Valorant is CPU-bound, a short burst of CPU work anywhere on your system — a Chrome tab playing video, Discord's overlay, Windows Defender scanning, Windows Update in the background — can delay a frame. That's a stutter even when your average FPS is high. It's why 1% lows matter more than average FPS in this game.
- Close browsers and launchers you aren't using before you queue.
- Disable overlays you don't need (Discord, Xbox Game Bar, GeForce Experience).
- Settings → Gaming → Game Mode → On, and use a High Performance power plan.
- Check your CPU temperature — a throttling CPU causes exactly this kind of dip.
- Never try to disable or tamper with Vanguard; Valorant won't run without it, and it can get you flagged.
SurgeFPSSurgeFPS records your Valorant sessions and marks every stutter with its measured cause — like a Discord CPU spike or a Defender scan — then offers a one-click fix you can undo any time. It even splits lobby, loading and live match so menus don't skew your numbers.
